Join a life-changing ocean conservation adventure in Bali!
Join us in Bali as a marine conservation volunteer and help restore one of the island’s most vibrant coral reefs! Partnering with our local NGO from North Bali, you’ll take part in vital marine conservation work—rebuilding coral reefs, protecting sea turtles, and supporting coastal communities in safeguarding their marine ecosystems.
Our mission is to restore coral habitats and promote sustainable tourism that keeps Bali’s oceans healthy for generations to come. Located in the peaceful North Bali village of Tianyar, this project offers the perfect opportunity to volunteer in Bali, connect with the local culture, and experience the beauty of ethical eco-travel—where volcanic mountains meet turquoise seas.
Choose from two incredible Bali marine conservation experiences
We offer a well-organised, immersive marine conservation experience where you can choose to volunteer for Reef Restoration Snorkeling or Bali Conservation Diving—or experience both during your stay! Whether you’re helping with reef restoration in Bali, building artificial reef structures, or learning sustainable diving practices, your work directly supports the recovery of Bali’s coral reefs and marine biodiversity. Each programme follows strict environmental and ethical volunteering guidelines, ensuring that every dive and activity contributes to responsible ocean conservation and sustainable tourism in Indonesia.
Be part of the mission to restore Bali’s reefs
Above all, your contribution fuels the heart of our marine conservation work in Bali. Your volunteer fee directly supports your experience—covering accommodation, meals, and project coordination—while also funding reef restoration projects, community education, and marine life protection. Every dive you take, every reef structure you build, and every sea turtle you help protect contributes to restoring Bali’s coral reefs and preserving Indonesia’s marine biodiversity. Your support sustains these vital ocean conservation initiatives and creates waves of positive change that last long after your volunteer in Bali adventure ends. Apply now to make a real impact beneath the surface!

Volunteer Requirements and Activities
What are the requirements to join this program?
You must be at least 18 years old, in good physical condition and able to do snorkeling. Also, you need a positive and practical attitude towards conservation and must be able to speak English. Our volunteers are also expected to respect the local culture and traditions.
What are the minimum diving requirements if I want to dive as a volunteer?
Participants must have at least an Open Water Diver certification to join the underwater activities. Further diving certifications are available at an additional cost.
What activities will I be doing during the week?
For non-divers, you can volunteer for the Bali Reef Conservation program: Your main role is contributing to the construction and deployment of artificial reef structures on the beach alongside local fishermen. If you are a diver, you will also participate as a volunteer for the Bali Conservation Diving program in weekly dives to move and position these structures underwater (5-9 meters deep)
Are there other volunteer activities besides marine work?
Yes, you may choose to head up to the local school to help the teaching volunteers with their class during the afternoon session. During turtle nesting season (April to August), you may also be able to assist with sea turtle conservation efforts.
What is the typical volunteer schedule?
Both programs run on a weekly schedule of 4 days on, 3 days off. The Bali Reef Conservation volunteering is typically Monday to Thursday, split into two sessions: a morning session (9 am–11 am) and an afternoon session (2 pm–4 pm). Volunteers have the rest of the day off after 4 pm. The Bali Conservation Diving runs from Friday to Monday and then has a 3-day break.
What can volunteers do in their free time?
You get one day off per week and free time in the evenings and during breaks. You can use this time to relax at the center, visit the local village, or explore nearby tourist spots like Hua Hin and Cha-am. We also offer organised excursions to national parks and have weekly group activities like educational talks, sports, or trivia nights.
Project Information
What is the project's main goal?
The program’s goal is to preserve and restore the marine ecosystems of the Tianyar coastal area in Bali by creating and deploying artificial reef structures to support coral and fish habitats. The project also aims to empower the local fishing community with sustainable practices.
What are the key environmental challenges in this area?
The local coral reef has been severely damaged due to historical ship anchoring, unsustainable fishing practices, discarded equipment, and significant plastic pollution. A 150 m x 100 m section of the reef is currently devoid of life.
What is included in the Program Fee?
The fee includes shared accommodation, local support, pick-up from Denpasar International Airport (DPS) or a local hotel, three daily meals on the 4 project days, Wi-Fi access, and the materials for building the artificial reef structures. The remaining part of your fee goes directly to supporting the conservation work.
What is included for Diving?
For weekly diving and underwater restoration, you must be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver.
If you are not yet certified, you can complete the 3-day PADI Open Water Diver course with our instructor at the restoration sites for $380.
You can also pursue further PADI certifications (Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster) on-site.
Additionally, as a program participant, you will earn the base-level Conservation Diver Marine Ecology & Monitoring certification and have the option to complete further specialty courses.
Do I need to bring any diving equipment?
A full set of dive equipment is provided for all dives as part of the Conservation Diving program. This includes BCD, regulators, weights, tanks, masks, boots, and fins.
Where is the project located?
The project is located in the charming fishing village of Tianyar on Bali’s northern coast. It is approximately a three-hour drive from Denpasar and the popular tourist destinations in Southern Bali.
Safety, Health and Travel
Do I need insurance?
Yes, you must have valid travel and medical insurance that specifically covers all your activities, including scuba diving.
What are the visa requirements for volunteering?
All volunteers must obtain a C6 volunteering visa before arrival, regardless of the duration of your stay. It is no longer permitted to enter with a Visa On Arrival or tourist visa. The visa is valid for 60 days and is extendable.
What vaccinations are recommended?
You must consult with your local doctor or travel clinic to determine the necessary vaccinations, but common diseases suffered by volunteers include typhoid fever and dengue.
How do I get to the accommodation?
Flights must arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Pickup transport is provided from the airport or a nearby hotel on Sunday until 5 pm. For other arrival times, we can arrange a transfer upon request. Transfer to the North Bali accommodation takes approximately three hours.
Can I rent a scooter or motorbike?
It is strongly advised against renting or traveling on motorbikes or scooters due to chaotic traffic, challenging road conditions, and the high risk of accidents among tourists.
Project Facilities
What is the accommodation like?
Your stay will be in basic yet comfortable shared accommodation in beach-style chalets. You will share a bedroom with up to three other volunteers (couples can share a room). You will have access to a shared outdoor bathroom with cold showers. We provide bed linen, but please bring your own towel and toiletries.
What kind of food is provided?
Three freshly prepared meals (traditional Indonesian dishes) are provided daily during the project days. Vegetarian options are always available, and vegan dishes can be provided upon request. For the Bali Reef Conservation volunteers, weekend meals are available for an additional small cost.
Is there WiFi available?
Yes, free WiFi for volunteers is available, but please avoid large downloads.
Are there other facilities available such as ATMs?
Local amenities, including supermarkets, ATMs, and a launderette/shops, are just a short walk away (about 5 minutes). Nearby laundry service costs approximately IDR 7,000 per kilo
What should volunteers bring?
Volunteers can refer to the project’s volunteer guide, which includes a list of recommended kit that they should bring. Volunteer guides are provided at the time of booking your volunteer placement.
Will I get support and guidance during my stay?
Of course! We are very proud of our friendly and talented team, who are happy to help throughout your stay. Our dedicated on-site volunteer coordinators are always available to help with scheduling or personal issues. They will also provide a full orientation upon your arrival, including a tour, health and safety instructions, and a deep dive into our mission. If you have any questions or concerns before your trip, then please reach out via ‘Contact Us’.
