“My experience at the Rescue Centre was life changing.” Sam Hunt
Growing food for 400 wild animals
Feeding so many animals is a huge task. The farm team at the Java Wildlife Rescue Centre is focused on sustainability and food production. Currently, the centre operates a diversified organic farm, including coffee and fruit production on 2 hectares/ 5 acres. The vegetable operation, coming into its second year of production, supplies high-quality organic vegetables and fruits to the rescued animals. It is being developed on land previously used for rice production with a greenhouse and compost building. We practice minimal-soil disturbance methods, prioritizing soil health and composting.
This sustainable farming internship will teach you about tropical organic food production and soil restoration. You will become an important part of our small farm team. You will need to be prepared to assist with all aspects of growing organic vegetables and fruits using hand tools alone. You will be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and positive. As an intern, you may be asked to work in other areas than on the farm, for example, assisting the Keepers with animal care. The sustainable farming internship is suited to all levels of ability as you will learn as you go with the assistance of the Sustainability Program Manager and Assistant Farm Manager

Enjoy Java's fascinating natural sights
You will be based in the beautiful foothills of West Java about 800 meters above sea level. The climate is tropical with day temperatures of 25 to 32 degrees Celcius. At night, it is a lot more chilly, as low as 15 degrees. The centre is located in a stunning rainforest area. It offers many opportunities for nature activities such as spotting wildlife, swimming in the large natural waterfalls nearby. The area is famous for at least 6 awesome waterfalls: some as high as 100 metres.
You can also join organised trips, for instance, caving with professional guides in the 1500 meter long cave. Alternatively, a guided tour around the amazing tea plantations that are typical for West-Java. Other activities include birding and Javan cooking lessons. The historic cities Bogor and Bandung are within travel distance. So, there are plenty of unforgettable experiences to be had.
