Boost Your Career as an Orangutan Media Intern!

Are you passionate about wildlife and social media? Our Sumatra grassroots wildlife programme is offering an exciting Communications Internship opportunity. This is your chance to gain hands-on experience in conservation communications and make a real impact on orangutan preservation.

For this Media Internship, you’ll manage our Instagram and Facebook presence, create engaging content, and build our online community. You’ll work directly with our team to gather stories and materials from our conservation efforts, transforming them into compelling social media posts, graphics, and multimedia content. This internship provides valuable experience in social media marketing and content creation within the conservation sector.

Skills and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include crafting visually appealing posts, interacting with followers, and contributing to our overall communication strategy. While graphic design (Canva/InShot) and email marketing (Mailchimp) are a plus, your passion for wildlife and strong communication skills are paramount. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking a communications internship with a focus on environmental impact.

  • Essential skills: strong written and verbal communication, a creative mindset, excellent time management, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively. Attention to detail is crucial. Previous experience in communication, marketing, or non-profits is advantageous.
  • Personal qualities: a genuine passion for environmental conservation, adaptability, a positive attitude, and commitment to ethical communication.
  • Responsibilities: managing social media, content creation, and potential support for newsletters and fundraising. You’ll monitor engagement metrics and contribute to volunteer engagement through targeted communications.

This social media internship is ideal for those seeking hands-on experience in the conservation sector while using their digital communication skills to make a real impact for wildlife conservation.

It is not suitable for students who need to complete an academic project or gain credits for their degree, as no academic supervision is provided on-site.

If you’re ready to put your social media skills to use in a meaningful way, apply now!

Explore Sumatra's natural and cultural delights

Your project site is on the edge of the Unesco-listed Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra: one of the most abundant tropical rainforests in Asia. The Batu Kapal site is just outside the village of Bukit Lawang where you can find a selection of guest houses and eateries. The village has built a reputation for primate spotting, but is still relatively unspoilt with only local accommodation and food outlets. It takes about 3 hours to reach Bukit Lawang by road from Medan International airport. All transfers from and to Medan airport are included in your fee.

Apart from the lush forest, the area offers plenty to explore. You can go river-tubing in the Landak river or caving to see the bats and swallows. The Tangkahan elephant sanctuary is a day trip away. If you like to learn more about the wonderful local culture, then we can arrange cultural trips and visits to the famous volcanic Lake Toba with its rich indigenous Batak tribal heritage.
