URBAN WILDLIFE VOLUNTEERING

Be the Bridge Between Cities and Wildlife

In this 2-week Urban Wildlife Volunteer Summer Programme, you will step into the ever-evolving world of urban conservation. Concrete jungles are expanding, but nature isn’t disappearing—it’s adapting. From green corridors to backyard habitats, wildlife is finding a way to survive in our cities. Now more than ever, we need dedicated individuals to help us navigate this new frontier and find sustainable ways to share our spaces.

As an Urban Wildlife Volunteer, you won’t just watch from the sidelines or read about conservation in a textbook. You will be on the ground, working directly alongside local communities and experienced conservation experts to tackle real-world human-wildlife interactions head-on, with a focus on the endangered long-tailed macaque.

Why This Work Matters

Urban growth can lead to conflict, but it also creates an incredible opportunity for innovation. True conservation doesn’t just happen in remote national parks; it happens in our own neighbourhoods. By bridging the gap between urban development and the natural world, you help protect local biodiversity while fostering a culture of empathy and respect among the people who live there.

What You Will Gain & Do:

  • Evidence-Based Field Research: Step into the field to collect critical data on animal behaviour and human-wildlife interactions. You’ll help gather the scientific evidence needed to design compassionate, long-term solutions instead of reactive measures.

  • Community-Led Advocacy: Work directly with local communities to establish grassroots solutions. You’ll help empower residents by introducing practical, non-invasive deterrents—like monkey-proof bin latches and proper waste management habits.

  • Impactful Education & Outreach: Lead engaging school programs and public events that deconstruct misconceptions about our urban wildlife neighbours. You’ll teach people how to share spaces safely and responsibly without feeding or disrupting wild populations.

  • Multidisciplinary Skill-Building: Gain unique, real-world experience at the intersection of veterinary science, animal behaviour, sociology, and community organising, working alongside dedicated conservation practitioners.

Urban Wildlife Volunteer

Programme Structure

The two-week programme offers a progressive introduction to urban wildlife conservation by blending ecological fieldwork with social science and community engagement. Designed as an immersive learning journey, the experience begins with field-based wildlife observation before expanding into the human behaviours, cultural perspectives, and real-world challenges that shape urban coexistence.

1 WEEK

Week 1 focuses on ecological field research, where volunteers explore urban forest ecosystems and learn to observe the behaviour of the endangered long-tailed macaque in both natural and human-adapted environments.

Volunteers will:

  • Conduct early morning and evening field observations of macaque behaviour in urban and forest-edge habitats
  • Record behavioural data in small teams using standard field research methods
  • Assist in setting up and monitoring camera traps in selected study sites
  • Work in urban forest edges and human–wildlife conflict hotspots to support ongoing research

2 WEEK

Week 2 focuses on the human dimension of conservation, where volunteers engage with local communities living alongside the endangered long-tailed macaque to better understand real-world human–wildlife conflict situations.

Volunteers will:

  • Visit residential areas and community sites affected by macaque interactions and conflict
  • Take part in guided discussions with local stakeholders and conservation practitioners
  • Support outreach and awareness activities promoting human–wildlife coexistence
  • Explore how waste management, human behaviour, and cultural attitudes influence conflict dynamics

ON-SITE ACCOMMODATION

Participants stay in shared student dormitory-style accommodation with on-site bathrooms, 24-hour security, and regular cleaning services.

Week 1 accommodation is in a forest setting with basic facilities, including traditional Malaysian-style toilets, designed to support field-based activities. Week 2 accommodation is in the city and includes air-conditioning and hot showers.
